Pupils' Council
03 Dec 2021
An important step in our pupils’ journey to citizenship
At the Ecole Française de Londres Jacques Prévert, we do all we can to ensure that children gradually take more and more responsibility for their learning, developing the strong values of independence, initiative and citizenship.
In class
“At a class level, the Pupil Council is a tool that offers a space in which pupils can engage in debate, express themselves freely, make suggestions, and take decisions regarding projects and events related to their class calendar and current events (creation of rules for how they operate, timings, and the school premises, settling conflicts between pupils, preparing projects, group events, etc.). The Council is a space in which to discuss problems in class, create school rules, and remind each other of correct behaviour. As such, the Council is a powerful tool for maintaining order in class and an opportunity for pupils to take part in a democratic process while improving school life. It can also be a place for debate, during which the children can talk freely about their feelings, their reactions to art and literature, the research they have conducted, current events, and their own experiences.”

At school
At a school-wide level, class representatives from years CE1 to CM2 (primary years 3 to 6), meet several times per year on the same model as older pupils in secondary school (French college and lycée). Their meetings are chaired by the school’s headteacher and enable class representatives to make their schoolmates’ voices heard, sharing their concerns, questions and suggestions for a harmonious and fulfilling school life.
