Wellbeing Wednesday - Introduction of a Comprehensive PSHCE Curriculum and Programme on Empathy

01 May 2024

In a progressive move aimed at enhancing the educational experience and fostering holistic development, Ecole Jacques Prévert will implement two transformative schemes starting September 2024: the English Personal, Social, Health, Citizenship, and Economic (PSHCE) curriculum and the French Programme on Empathy. These initiatives underscore the school's commitment to providing a comprehensive education that nurtures not only academic excellence but also essential life skills and values, including the development of psychosocial skills essential for success in life.

The English PSHCE Curriculum:

The English PSHCE curriculum, to be implemented across all levels of the primary school, is designed to empower students with the knowledge and skills necessary for navigating the complexities of the modern world. It encompasses a wide range of topics aimed at fostering personal development, social awareness, and overall well-being.

Content and Values:
  1. Personal Development: Students will explore concepts such as self-awareness, self-esteem, resilience, and goal setting. Emphasis will be placed on embracing diversity, individuality, and promoting a positive self-image.
  2. Social Skills: Communication, teamwork, empathy, and conflict resolution will be central themes. Students will learn the importance of effective communication, understanding different perspectives, and building positive relationships.
  3. Health and Well-being: Comprehensive lessons on physical and mental health will empower students to make informed choices regarding nutrition, exercise, hygiene, and stress management. Topics such as body image, puberty, and emotional well-being will be addressed sensitively and inclusively.
  4. Relationships: The focus will be on building healthy and positive relationships, including friendships, family dynamics, and interactions within the wider community. Students will learn the importance of respect, empathy, and communication in fostering meaningful connections.
  5. Financial Literacy: Basic concepts of financial management, budgeting, and responsible consumer behavior will be introduced to foster financial independence and preparedness.
The values underpinning the English PSHCE curriculum align closely with Ecole Jacques Prévert's ethos of inclusivity, respect, and global citizenship. By embracing these values, students will develop into well-rounded individuals equipped to thrive in an interconnected world.

French Programme on Empathy:

In addition to the English PSHCE curriculum, Ecole Jacques Prévert will also introduce the French Programme on Empathy from September 2024. This initiative, deeply rooted in French culture and values, aims to instill in students a profound understanding of empathy as a cornerstone of human connection and social harmony.

Key Components:
  1. Understanding Emotions: Through experiential learning and storytelling, students will develop the ability to recognise and express their own emotions while empathising with others.
  2. Building Positive Relationships: Role-playing and collaborative projects will encourage students to develop empathy and communication skills necessary for building and maintaining positive relationships.
  3. Promoting Inclusivity: Discussions on diversity, tolerance, and social justice will foster empathy and compassion towards individuals from different backgrounds and experiences.
  4. Empathetic Action: Students will be encouraged to apply their understanding of empathy in real-life situations, promoting kindness, understanding, and support within the school community.
These initiatives reflect the school's dedication to preparing students to become compassionate, resilient, and globally minded individuals, ready to thrive in an ever-changing world.

Best wishes,
Mrs Weber
