Wellbeing Wednesday - Arts and Wellbeing

24 May 2023

In recent years, there has been a growing recognition of the profound impact of art education on the overall wellbeing of children. Art classes in schools provide a unique platform for students to explore their creativity, develop critical thinking skills, and express themselves. Beyond the realm of aesthetics, art education nurtures emotional intelligence, enhances cognitive abilities, and fosters a sense of self-confidence and belonging.
  • Cultivating Self-Expression and Emotional Intelligence
Artistic endeavours offer children a means to express their thoughts, emotions, and experiences in a safe and non-judgmental environment. Learning art encourages students to communicate visually, helping them develop a language of their own. Whether through painting, drawing, sculpting, or other mediums, children learn to convey their feelings, thereby improving their emotional intelligence. This self-expression fosters self-awareness and empathy, enabling them to better understand and relate to the world around them.
  • Encouraging Creativity and Critical Thinking
Art classes in schools stimulate children's creativity, developing their ability to think outside the box and approach challenges with innovative solutions. Engaging in artistic activities allows students to develop a flexible mindset, as they learn to experiment, take risks, and adapt their ideas. This creative thinking extends beyond the art classroom and becomes a valuable skill applicable to various academic subjects and real-life situations.
  • Boosting Cognitive Development
Art education goes hand in hand with cognitive development. When children participate in art classes, they refine their fine motor skills, hand-eye coordination, and spatial awareness. These skills are crucial for their overall development and can positively impact their academic performance. Moreover, engaging in artistic activities stimulates both hemispheres of the brain, enhancing memory retention, concentration, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Building Self-Confidence and Resilience
Learning art at school provides children with opportunities to set goals, overcome challenges, and experience a sense of accomplishment. As they observe their artistic skills improve over time, their self-confidence grows. Art classes encourage children to embrace mistakes as part of the creative process, teaching them resilience and the ability to learn from setbacks. This newfound confidence extends beyond art, empowering children to tackle various endeavors with a positive mindset.
  • Fostering a Sense of Belonging and Inclusivity:
Art classrooms are inclusive spaces that celebrate diversity, allowing children to express their unique perspectives and backgrounds. Art education encourages collaboration, empathy, and appreciation for different cultures and ideas. By working on group projects, engaging in critiques, and showcasing their artwork, students develop a sense of belonging and build meaningful connections with their peers. This sense of community contributes to their overall wellbeing and creates a positive school environment.
The school has been getting ready to open its doors to all the Jacques Prévert families for an art tour in the classrooms and hallways to discover the productions made this year by our students. The library is organising an exhibition around Anthony Brown's albums that inspired the students of the school this year. An exhibition of the Bozart Clubs' artistic productions is taking place in our main hall room and the APEEF is organising a sale of second-hand books in French and English in the dining hall.

The children will be their parents’ guide throughout the visit, while the teachers will be in their classrooms to welcome you and answer your questions.

Best wishes,
Mrs Weber
