The BCD

The school's French library houses around 18,000 books and magazines! It offers a place for reading and writing of various kinds, along with IT resources.

The Dewey classification system is used to organise the collection.
-Books: Fiction (annuals, novels, stories, comic books, plays, poetry) and Non-Fiction.
-Magazines (Publishers: Bayard, Milan, Fleurus, etc.)

The school has subscriptions to several magazines published by Bayard, Milan and Fleurus.
At the start of each school year, representatives from Bayard and Milan offer families subscriptions to their magazines. The magazines are sent directly to children’s homes. Similarly,   L’école des Loisirs, which publishes annuals, novels and stories, has an offer in which works are sent to the school for distribution to pupils.

Individual borrowing is allowed during the slot given to each class on school time.
Pupils from CP to CM2 are taught how to use BCDI (library management software), which allows them to take out books all on their own.
Nursery school pupils choose from books and magazines available in their classrooms and can borrow several items per week.

Daily focus events are organised based on library items (reading annuals; reading multiple works by a single author or illustrator or on a specific theme; discovery of books, including non-fiction and magazines).
Obligatory reading, primarily novels in year CM, can be followed up by a study of the work in question.
Pupils can also work on the main story for a newspaper, in the format of  Le Petit Quotidien, on a joint theme using Word and inserting photos sourced from the Internet.
Annual, novel and non-fiction reading challenges are sometimes held.
All of these activities are discussed and agreed upon with the teachers in each year group.

Every year, we take part in the French Institute’s  Salon du Livre jeunesse (young-reader book fair), the “South Ken Kids Festival”, along with various writers and illustrators. We also participate in the Culture and Libraries for All ( Culture et Bibliothèque Pour Tous – CBPT) reading competition and Press Week.

Moral and Civic Studies lessons for CM pupils are held in the library and document centre as part of the programme to open up and mix the three-year groups in stage 3 of the curriculum.

These are just a few examples!

Theatre companies such as  La Compagnie Parci Parlà and  Les 3 chardons are invited to perform at the school, bringing with them the magical world of fairy tales to enchant our pupils.

Mrs Hagg manages this cultural hub. Not only is she our librarian, but she is also – indeed, she is above all – a teacher.

Teaching and events in the library and document centre are part of the  Artistic and Cultural Journey on which the school takes all its pupils.
