This initiative is part of a three-week whole-school project during which we have been exploring:
-
Gender equality
-
International Women’s Day
-
Extraordinary women who have shaped our world
-
Women in science, in preparation for our upcoming Science Week
Throughout this period, pupils have engaged in meaningful discussions and activities during PSHE and EMC lessons, exploring what equality truly means, both in our daily lives and in the wider world.
Understanding Gender Equality
In class, the children discussed the idea that girls and boys, women and men, should have the same rights, responsibilities and opportunities. We reflected on questions such as:
-
Are certain jobs only for men or only for women?
-
How can stereotypes influence our choices?
-
What does fairness look like in school and in society?
Through stories, debates, and collaborative activities, pupils examined how attitudes have evolved over time and how equality benefits everyone. They also considered how respect, empathy and inclusion are essential values within our school community.
Learning from Inspiring and Extraordinary Women
As part of our work around International Women’s Day, classes highlighted the achievements of influential and extraordinary women in history, science, sport, literature and public life. Pupils explored how determination, courage and resilience have enabled women to overcome barriers and shape the world we live in today.
Next week, during Science Week, this reflection will continue with a particular focus on women in science, celebrating female scientists whose discoveries and innovations have contributed significantly to progress and knowledge. This cross-curricular approach allows pupils to see how gender equality connects to every field of learning.
These discussions encourage pupils to reflect on their own aspirations and to understand that their ambitions should never be limited by gender.
Promoting Equality in Everyday School Life
Beyond classroom discussions, pupils reflected on how gender equality applies within our own playgrounds and learning spaces:
-
Encouraging mixed teams in sport and collaborative work
-
Challenging stereotypes in language and play
-
Valuing everyone’s voice equally in discussions
-
Supporting one another’s interests and talents
By embedding these principles into daily practice, we strengthen a culture of mutual respect and belonging at Jacques Prévert.
Best wishes,
