Wellbeing Wednesday - Earth Day 2024: Educating Children to Develop Environmental Consciousness

17 Apr 2024

As the world commemorates Earth Day 2024, the global community rallies under the banner of "Planet vs Plastic," a theme that underscores the urgent need to address one of the most pressing environmental challenges of our time: plastic pollution. Against the backdrop of mounting concerns about the proliferation of plastic waste in our oceans, Earth Day serves as a rallying cry for action, inspiring individuals and communities to come together in defence of our planet.
At Ecole Jacques Prévert, Earth Day is not just a date on the calendar—it's a call to action. With a steadfast commitment to environmental stewardship, the school has embarked on a series of initiatives aimed at raising awareness about plastic pollution and empowering students to take meaningful action.

Empowering Eco Champions at Ecole Jacques Prévert

At the heart of Ecole Jacques Prévert's environmental efforts lies a deep commitment to educating the next generation of eco-conscious leaders. Through a multifaceted approach that combines classroom learning with hands-on experiences, the school equips students with the knowledge, skills, and motivation to become agents of change in their communities.
In the run-up to Earth Day 2024, the CM2 pupils have immersed themselves in a comprehensive study of plastic pollution, exploring its causes, consequences, and potential solutions. In English lessons, they have delved into the science behind plastic pollution, examined its environmental impacts, and critically assessed the role of individuals and society in addressing this global challenge.

Taking Action: From Awareness to Advocacy

But education alone is not enough. Armed with knowledge and a sense of purpose, students at Ecole Jacques Prévert have taken concrete steps to combat plastic pollution in their everyday lives and beyond. From reducing single-use plastics to organising community clean-up efforts, they have embraced their roles as environmental stewards and catalysts for change.
One of the school's most notable initiatives is the transformation of waste materials into works of art. In a creative twist on recycling, CM2 students have repurposed discarded plastics and other materials to create artworks that not only captivate the imagination but also convey a powerful message about waste reduction and resource conservation.

A Global Perspective: Journey to Dublin

In an exciting development, Ecole Jacques Prévert is extending its environmental efforts beyond the school gates and onto the international stage. The six Eco Delegates from CM1 and CM2 will join students from four other French schools in London for a transformative journey to Dublin. There, they will participate in a series of educational activities and exchanges aimed at deepening their understanding of plastic pollution and preparing for an upcoming mini COP event in London.
During their three-day immersion in Dublin, students will have the opportunity to meet with scientists, collaborate with local charities, and engage in hands-on environmental projects. Through these experiences, they will gain valuable insights into the complexities of plastic pollution and emerge as even stronger advocates for environmental action.

A Call to Action

As Earth Day 2024 arrives, Ecole Jacques Prévert is aiming at making a difference in the fight against plastic pollution. Through dedication and teamwork, students are spreading awareness and inspiring others to join the effort for a cleaner environment. In the face of daunting environmental challenges, they remind us that change is possible—and that together, we can make a difference for generations to come.

Best wishes,
Mrs Weber
